In Talks with Rising Hip-Hop Star, Trenton P.
Trenton P. is one of the hottest upcoming Hip Hop artists to release music in the past year. This Spring we see him rising to stardom even more so with his highly-anticipated release, Blacklist, on the horizon. Releasing a string of singles and videos, the most recent "Ready for It," has taken over the ears and minds of listeners. We had the distinct honor in catching up with Trenton P. as he dives into 2017.
What is the inspiration behind your new album, "Blacklist"?When I started writing for this album I didn’t really have a direction. As I got further and further into I started sitting in my studio for hours and hours and didn’t talk to anyone. My phone never rang and I felt like no one wanted to speak to me. I kind of felt Blacklisted. As I sat and thought about that it really hit me that it’s how I have felt my whole life. Thus Blacklist was created.
What made you discover your passion for creating an eclectic sound of hip hop? I just want to be different. I don’t want to be remembered as someone who sounds like someone else. I want to be remembered as someone who sounds like unique. I think that a lot of artist sound the same these days and I feel like that is really hurting the music coming out these days.
I really enjoy the new single and video for "Ready for it."! What was the inspiration that went into creating it? What places in your mind did you channel to create it? Well I think that the answer to that is simple. I don’t feel like people are ready for an artist like myself and I don’t mean that in a conceded way what I mean is that I feel like I get over looked and people don’t really think I am capable of being one of the greats in the industry. I also don’t think that people are ready for change in general. Thus I came up with Ready for It. It’s probably one of my favorite songs off the album.
What are your favorite venues to perform at? And if you had to choose, do you feel more comfortable in the studio or onstage, and why? My favorite venue to perform at would probably have to be Pops concert venue in STL simply because they shown me so much love and treat me like family. It’s a great venue and the staff is awesome. To answer your other question I would probably say that I love doing shows but you can make a mistake in the studio. You can’t make a mistake on stage and if you do you have to fight through it and hope no one notices lol.
Critically acclaimed from the start of your music career, how have fans and critics been receiving your new material from the upcoming record? You know I have got more love on the new music coming out than I could ever imagined. I think people are really getting excited to see what I am capable of creating and now I am able to take my time and put a lot of hours in at the studio so I don’t have to rush and put out an ok song. I get to create what I want and make it exactly how I want it.
How do you write your songs? What is the process like? Does it take you days, weeks, even longer? How does the perfect Trenton P piece come together? You know I read somewhere that Kanye took 3 years to write a song. I totally understand that now. If I can write a song in a day that that’s great but if it takes me a year to make that song perfect than I am okay with that as well. Sometimes I work with instrumentals that are sent to me or I start from scratch with a producer creating the sound I’m looking for. I have even been working with live instruments a lot lately. Once we get the sound that way we want it then come the words and from there I just write and rewrite until it’s the way I want it.
How did you create a sound throughout time that is so uniquely your own? What defines the Trenton P sound to you?
I guess it just comes down to the simple fact of I want to be different. I want to be heard and I feel like if I’m creating the same music as the next guy then chances are that my music is going to get looked over. It has taken me years to find myself as an artist and it’s just now starting to take its course. I will continue to shape and mold my music and career until I feel like I am successful as of right now I have a lot of work to do. The good thing is I’m not afraid of hard work and long hours.
This year is already shaping up to be a huge year for you. What do you hope to accomplish in the New Year?
Well for starters I just want to say thank you for the interview. To answer your question I’m hoping to become a full time musician. I would like to do a 60 city tour and put out a second project this year.
